Wildfires Affecting Rail Transit

Good Day,

Due to the significant wildfires in Northern Ontario, westbound containers moving through the affected CN rail corridors may experience delays or be temporarily held until it is safe for rail operations to resume.

Please see CN’s official notice below. I have also included a list of the containers that may be affected, along with their trip numbers, below the CN notice.

According to CPKC, its rail lines are currently unaffected, as its route is located farther south and closer to the lake. However, Linehaul and Intermodal will continue to monitor both rail networks closely and provide further updates as the situation develops.

Wildfire Service Impact Update

Due to the ongoing wildfires in Northern Ontario between Sioux Lookout and Armstrong. Currently, CN personnel are not permitted to enter the affected area. Portions of the region have been shut down and evacuated as a safety precaution. We are awaiting confirmation from Environment Canada that conditions are safe for operations to resume.

Westbound train departures from both Brampton and Montreal remain suspended. In addition, terminals are not currently accepting RVs for Westbound loading.

The affected area has not yet been deemed passable, and active wildfire conditions continue to affect operations. At this time, we do not have a confirmed ETA for when service will resume

Eastbound Service

Eastbound traffic from Brampton and Montreal is continuing to operate. However, due to car supply shortages caused by delayed Westbound train arrivals, loading volumes are currently reduced.

Western Terminal Operations

The following terminals are not currently loading Eastbound traffic until the track is confirmed passable:

  • Vancouver
  • Edmonton
  • Calgary
  • Saskatoon
  • Regina
  • Winnipeg

Shipments that have already been ingated, as well as those pending ingate, should not be expected to move according to published transit schedules.

Some traffic in transit that has been affected by the current fires, has been staged. Once operations can safely resume, this traffic will continue to destination.

We also recommend that any shipments currently deramped be scheduled for delivery or picked up as soon as possible. Once operations resume safely, we anticipate a significant influx of inbound volume arriving at terminals, which may create additional congestion and delays.

We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
